These assets include personal traits as well as support, empowerment, and bonding to community, school, and family. This framework encourages communities to come together and promote and foster assets in all youth. The more assets a child has, the less likely they are to become involved in problem behaviors such as teen pregnancy, school dropout, violence, and substance abuse. <\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignfull is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-d2da2050 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-bottom:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-c499743de40151294d174a42a6514162 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"color:#000000;background-color:#d1d1e1;padding-top:2em;padding-right:2em;padding-bottom:2em;padding-left:2em\">\n<p>At a time when there is great concern for crime prevention and the need to keep our young people occupied, it is important that our approach is not reactive and limited to specific challenging populations but rather proactive and targeted to all youth. This way we are preventing problems and issues in the future, thus having a better chance for a thriving community. Evidence-based programs or programs using evidenced-based strategies have proven to be most effective in other parts of the world and have been mentioned in both Cayman&#8217;s Criminality Report and the National Anti-Drug Strategy. It is then prudent that our already scarce resources be geared to more evidence-based programs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignfull is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-d2da2050 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-bottom:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-982dac4629304b296367e1332f39c727 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"color:#000000;background-color:#d1d1e1;padding-top:2em;padding-right:2em;padding-bottom:2em;padding-left:2em\">\n<p><strong>About the Developmental Assets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Search Institute\u2019s Developmental Assets (or asset) model is based on a set of theoretical hypotheses and empirical evidence that helping youth experience healthy developmental resources and opportunities, and helping them to successfully achieve developmental tasks is one of the best ways to prevent negative behaviors and outcomes and to promote positive behaviors and outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The asset model is based on a synthesis of multiple lines of inquiry aimed at identifying the \u201cbuilding blocks\u201d of development that contribute to three types of healthy outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>prevention of high-risk behaviors<\/strong> (e.g., substance use, violence, early sexual intercourse, school failure); The <strong>enhancement of thriving behaviors<\/strong> (e.g., school success); and <strong>resilience, or the capacity to function adequately in the face of adversity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-d2da2050 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-bottom:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-7c0b04431916345c624a7a85b6819f88 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"color:#000000;background-color:#ffe97d;padding-top:2em;padding-right:2em;padding-bottom:2em;padding-left:2em\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"single\" style=\"font-size:40px\"><strong>External Assets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Support<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Young people need to experience support, care, and love from their families, neighbors, and many others. They need organizations and institutions that provide positive, supportive environments.<\/em><br><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Family Support<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Family life provides high levels of love and support<strong> 2. Positive Family Communication<\/strong> &#8211; Young person and her or his parent(s) communicate positively, and young person is willing to seek advice and counsel from parents.<strong><br>3. Other Adult Relationships<\/strong> &#8211; Young person receives support from three or more nonparent adults.<strong> 4. Caring Neighborhood<\/strong> &#8211; Young person experiences caring neighbors.<strong><br>5. Caring School Climate<\/strong> &#8211; School provides a caring, encouraging environment.<strong> 6. Parent Involvement in Schooling<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Parent(s) are actively involved in helping the child succeed in school.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Empowerment<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Young people need to be valued by their community and have opportunities to contribute to the world around them. For this to occur, they must be safe and feel secure.<\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Community Values Youth<\/strong> &#8211; Young person perceives that adults in the community value youth.<strong> 8. Youth as Resources<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Young people are given useful roles in the community.             <strong>9. Service to Others<\/strong> &#8211; Young person serves in the community one hour or more per week.<strong>10. Safety<\/strong> &#8211; Young person feels safe at home, school, and in the neighborhood.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Boundaries and expectations<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<em>Young people need to know what is expected of them and understand whether the activities and behaviors they choose are &#8220;in bounds&#8221; and &#8220;out of bounds.&#8221;<\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>11. Family Boundaries<\/strong> &#8211; Family has clear rules and consequences and monitors the young persons&#8217; whereabouts.<strong><br>12. School Boundaries<\/strong> &#8211; School provides clear rules and consequences.<strong> 13. Neighborhood Boundaries<\/strong> &#8211; Neighbors take responsibility for monitoring young people\u2019s behavior.<strong><br>14. Adult Role Models<\/strong> &#8211; Parent(s) and other adults model positive, responsible behavior.<strong> 15. Positive Peer Influence<\/strong> &#8211; Young person&#8217;s best friends model responsible behavior.<strong>      16. High Expectations<\/strong> &#8211; Both parent(s) and teachers encourage the young person to do well.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Constructive use of time<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<em>Young people need constructive, enriching opportunities for growth through creative activities, youth programs, time with family and faith based organizations.<\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>17.<\/strong> <strong>Creative Activities<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Young person spends three or more hours per week in lessons or practice in music, theater, or other arts.<strong>18. Religious Community<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Young person spends one hour or more per week in activities in a religious institution.<strong> 20.
